Evening at Ganesh Pal

Hello You beautiful soul,

If you are a frequent visitor to my blog, we had been to Shivgange waterfall the other day, ‘Virtually’. In case you have missed the waterfall, do check the video here. It’s beautiful..!!

The place we are talking about today or rather visiting virtually today is Ganesh Pal. This is the prior point to the waterfall. River Shalmala flows via Ganesh Pal, to Shivgange.

This is few kilometres away from Shivgange. A remote area amidst thick forest. From the main road few Kilo meters towards Ganesh Pal, you can see the welcome board. As the road ahead is not in a good condition, it’s better to park your vehicle there and start walking.!

It’s around a kilo meter or two long path. You will love the walk as nature will keep you entertained with some really nice music. Music of water, birds, breeze..! You can see thick forest on your left and a beautiful paddy field on the right. You can also see a house at the end of the field. That house is actually on the river bank. Just imagine… staying at that place. In nature’s lap. Blissful isn’t it??

While we were walking we saw the road that was damaged due to land sliding. By the look of it, seemed like that had happened recently. It’s a pretty usual scene in wester ghats during monsoons. Still, it’s scary.

Once you reach the end of the paddy field, you can hear the water flowing. That’s our today’s spot – Ganesh Pal.

Pal or pal means portion in Kannada.Once you reach the river bank, you can see a Lord Ganesha temple, which divides the river into two portions. Hence the name Ganesh Pal. You can also see lord Shiva linga and Nandi statue there.

During summers you can easily walk to the temple and offer praying. There is also a bridge that connects to the other side. But due to heavy water, the path and the bridge are submerged currently. Hence we had to pray from far. In order to see Ganesha, we had to walk little further along the bank.

This river spot is amidst thick forest. Fresh air, bird chirping, music of water makes it a perfect place to relax. Temple gives a spiritual touch which makes the experience even more calming.

As there are no eateries near by, you will have to carry your own food. In case you want to pack some food then Jaddigadde is a small village near by where you get some decent food which you can pack. But please make sure you leave the place clean. As a responsible traveller and a human, it is our own duty to take care of our planet. Isn’t it??

Also, the place is quite remote. It’s advisable to visit the place and return before sunset.

You can have a virtual tour by clicking the video below. Enjoy some songs of nature. Oh yes, don’t forget to watch a beautiful artistic house of honey bees I found there..!

Let’s Go to Shivgange Waterfall Near Sirsi

As things were getting back to normal till couple of weeks ago ( Now we have new variant so that’s why mentioning it in past tense), we took a small break from our daily lives and revisited this beautiful waterfall Shivagange. Oh by the way, my district Uttara Kannada/ North Canara in the state of Karnataka, is famous for serene waterfalls.! There are many beautiful waterfalls, this one is one of my favourites – Shivgange waterfall.

Shivgange waterfall is around 35 KM away from Sirsi. Western ghats are always soothing. Lush green forest on both side of the road will keep you amused all throughout the journey. Roads are good, you don’t have to do any off-roading as such. Plus they have sign boards placed at regular distance, hence you don’t have to worry about getting lost..! (Hey if you are thinking you will use Google maps if you get lost, let me tell you, network is poor or no network at all in those areas..! )

Let’s talk about our favourite topic (apart from travelling and shopping of course), food..!! There is no restaurant or any shops near by. There is a small village named Jaddigadde, which is around 2 Kms away from Shivgange.  You can have or pack some decent food there. Please note, if you are carrying any food items or plastic water bottles, do not litter the place. This is the only planet we have and we need to take care of it.

Once you reach the parking area, you see staircase guiding you to the waterfall. Government has constructed staircase till the platform where you can get first glimpse of the waterfall.

The Shivgange Falls is on the river Shalmala, flowing in Uttara Kannada/ North Canara district and it falls from a height of 74m. The waterfall is amidst luscious green forests that adds to the beauty of the waterfall. Sound of water falling, singing of different birds, ahhh music of nature..! So calming.!

If you are a water baby and wondering if you can reach the bottom of the waterfall, answer is yes. You can reach the bottom of the waterfall to get closer view, but that is going to be an exhausting trekking experience..!!

Best time to visit the waterfall is in monsoon or right after the monsoon season. If you are visiting in monsoons, be careful especially if you are planning to trek and get closer to the waterfall. This is surely not an easy breezy little waterfall. You need to be extra careful while trekking, one wrong step and you might end up falling 50-100 ft. Hope you got my point..!!

You can have glimpse of Shivgange Waterfall here or I would say you can travel to Shivgange virtually here, by clicking on the video.!

Stay tuned for one more beautiful destination post in coming week. Hint : That’s a famous place which is very near to Shivgange waterfall. People who visit waterfall also visit the place where I’ll be taking you to, in my next post.!

Oh by the way, when was the last time you took a quick break to recharge your batteries?? Which is that place? Let me know in the comments section.

A Peaceful Place Called Shankara Honda In Sirsi ಶಂಕರ ಹೊಂಡ ಶಿರಸಿ

Everyone needs a peaceful break from the  chaos of life. The definition of break differs from person to person. If you ask me, a quiet place amidst nature would be a perfect idea of a quick break to recharge my mind. Nowadays, it’s not just cities where sound and air are polluted, even in small towns like mine, the sound pollution is at a good extent. Finding a place which is quiet and beautiful is sometimes acts as a bliss..! I have such place in my native place Sirsi.

Shankara Honda, a moderate size pond which is located in Veerabhadra Galli, Sirsi, Karnataka, India. This is inside the town but away from the busy streets, near to very famous Sirsi Marikamba temple. All you can hear is the sounds of nature.! The pond is said to be the birth place or origin of river Aghanashini.

Right next to Shankara Honda is Areca nut plantation. Which is a very common sight at my native place. It’s soothing to eyes and gives me that homely feel (YKWIM)

Shankara honda is not open 24*7. It’s open in the morning and in the evening time, to be more specific – 5:30 AM to 8 AM 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Place is kept very clean by the municipal corporation people. A beautiful garden, joggers lane, benches makes it a perfect place for morning and evening walks. Oh yes it has open gym, shower facilities too. Due to Corona, swimming has been restricted. Before Corona, people used to visit the place for a quick refreshing swim with their buddies.

Pond is quite huge and looks beautiful. Especially during golden hour of the day.!

Main attraction? Aqua buddies, I mean fishes. They are so so beautiful..! and foodie. People who visit here usually get something for these fishes to eat. It’s therapeutic to watch them and listen to the sound they make. Watch the video to believe it. We can find a lot many varieties (in size and colour) of fishes there.

Oh they also have these white beauties who are not so friendly with fishes, ducks. As they might end up over eating the fishes, ducks are usually caged. But person in charge of them comes on time and feeds them well. So if you visit Shankar Honda and see the ducks, don’t get fooled by their cries haha. They are well pampered.

Overall it is a quick peaceful escape from the usual chaotic life. If you ever visit Sirsi and have some spare time, do add this to your list.!

Tradition Called Chakli Kambla (ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿ ಕಂಬಳ) of Malenadu to Prepare Hand Chakli

Chakli is a popular crispy snack that is originated in my state Karnataka, India. This is made of rice flour and trust me it tastes so good, you can’t just have one ( I know it’s the tag line of a popular chips brand, but this holds true for Chakli too..! )

The other day there was this competition of preparation and exhibition of Chakli in my native. When I had been there it reminded me of my maternal grandpa. Because there they were promoting one of the oldest methods or I can say a tradition that is on the verge of getting vanished. They call this tradition or the chakli made out of this method as Hand Chakli (ಕೈ ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿ). As the name suggests, we do not use any tool to make the chakli, instead we use hands to make them..! Grandpa used to follow the same tradition to prepare Chakli. I used to look at him with awe as the preparation looks so magical. You will have to check the video to believe it.!

Back in those days, people use to celebrate this Chakli making like a mini festival. Where people used to invite their relatives, neighbours for Chakli kambla (ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿ ಕಂಬಳ). Kambla is a term that is used for the group of people who gather for the preparation of food. Theses get-togethers used to bring people closer. They used to divide the works/ chores and used to chitchat and spend some quality time while munching this yummy snack.

This hand chakli cannot be made using the rice flour that we get in the market. Flour preparation itself has some traditional methods that need to be followed. I can write a separate blog for that, if you are interested.! Let me know if it’s a yes from you.

Advantage of this traditional chakli is, they do not absorb excess oil. If you open packed chaklis, you can feel that oiliness. But with hand chakli, even if you open it after months, you will not feel that greasiness, instead they are as crispy as they were when they were freshly made.!

Post preparing the chakli, people in those days, used to store it in a huge copper vessels and tie the mouth of the vessel using a particular kind of cloth. This used to keep the chaklis super fresh.

Now this tradition is slowly vanishing. People opt for these chakli makers or they buy packed chakli. There are very less people left who know this art of making hand chakli. Even though this looks super easy, but it’s not that easy..!

I am super happy after visiting the exhibition. There was also a competition of making hand chakli. The lady who is preparing chakli in the video, is the runner up. The man who is seen preparing chakli at 3:38 is the winner of the competition. I personally feel we should encourage such competitions to make younger generation aware about these old methods and to keep our old traditions alive.

Do watch the video to know this tradition called Chakli kambla of western ghats. The way hand chakli is made. Video is in Kannada. But the preparation is worth watching. Especially if you are a foodie, you are going to love it.

New Member to My Skin & Hair Care Routine – Hydrosol

Last year while the world witnessed a lot of ‘New Normals’, lot of things changed in beauty industry as well. More people started leaning towards skincare and less on cosmetics or makeup products. While trying to know and try some chemical free natural skincare products, I came across this holy grail called – Hydrosol.

Let’s know what is product is all about. Shall we??

First and foremost let’s see what is Hydrosol?

Hydrosol is magical water ( I mean water based product with benefits which can work like magic) made from the distillation of fresh flowers, leaves, fruits and other plant material. Doesn’t that sound wow..!

So, there are multiple types of Hydrosol available right?

Yes. There are Hydrosol made of different flowers (my favourite is Rose), many leaves are used to make Hydrosol ( I liked curry leaves one so far!!) etc.

How is the consistency?

When I said it’s magical water, like literally. When it comes to consistency, it is as light as water.

What about fragrance? Are they strong smelling one??

They have more subtle scent mostly. Again depends on the variant. For example Rose Hydrosol is more soothing fragrant (if you like fragrance of Rose), curry leaves one is kind of moderate, Lavender one can fall on slightly stronger note.

Is it similar to essential oil? If not, how are they different from essential oils?

They have a lot in common with essential oil as Hydrosols are byproduct of essential oil manufacturing process.! What makes Hydrosol different is that they are way less concentrated as compared to essential oils.

Are they supposed to be used only for skin?

No. They can be used for both skin and hair.

How to use Hydrosol?

You can spritz Hydrosol on face like toner. Can be sprayed on scalp for the betterment of scalp and hair health. It can also be used as a base for your skin care and hair care DIYs (That’s more like my deal. I love DIYs. Don’t you?? ) Plus, some Hydrosol with slightly stronger smell can be used as body mist.!

Let’s talk about most important point – What are the benefits of Hydrosol?

Hydrosol can cleanse your skin, maintain pH level and calm your skin. If you have itchy scalp, Hydrosol can help you get healthy scalp. Some are even used for hair growth as well..! Hydrosol can also be used for relaxation..!

Things to take care of before using Hydrosol.

Even though studies have proved that Hydrosol doesn’t really have any side effects, I would still ask you to do a patch test before using it. That’s because our skin reacts differently to different products, even if it natural/ chemical free one..!

Facial Hair Removal Techniques I Have Tried and One That Worked

Facial hair, it is as natural as our hair on head..! Simple. Just like it’s individual’s choice to whether to keep it as it is or to shave it off the hair on head, it is one’s choice to take care of facial hair.

Hair type and growth rate depends on individual and underlying health condition. Some have very less or no facial hair, some have excess hair growth due to hormonal imbalance. I fall in the category where the growth rate is moderate. *touchwood*. So once a month works the best for me.

I personally don’t like to keep it as it is hence I choose to get it removed in a timely manner. In this post I am going to share the methods I have used so far (honestly not many methods) and one that works well for me.

  1. Turmeric Face Packs:

You know how we love Ayurvedic remedies when it come to skin and hair. Initially my mom didn’t allow me to get rid of facial hair. Because she knew it would be painful and she was worried that it might increase the hair growth. But you know when you are a teen, you usually tend to bother a lot about your looks than usual.! I was like any other teen, bit embarrassed about my facial hair. (Now when I think about it, they were not even that long to get noticed. But back in those days I used to feel people are looking at my moustache while talking to me..!Typical teenager..! )

Back to business, Ayurvedic remedies are something my mom chose for me. She used to make these face packs for me which happened to have ingredients which are said to reduce the hair growth.! I used to religiously apply those packs. Even though I did see slow change in the growth of facial hair but that did not help me get that ‘clean look’ I was looking for.!

2. Threading:

Then when I started complaining about the packs, mom took to the parlour just to give me the glimpse of how threading process is like and the results of it.! I remember how the parlour lady took the thread and pulled the facial hair of her customer. Even though the result was ‘clean’, it was all red and bumpy..! That was scary for me.! So I did not opt for it.

But I took (read it as stole) mom’s tweezers and thought of giving it a try by myself. Oops when I pulled a strand from my upper lips, I was left with teary eyes and bumps. That’s when I appreciated my decision of not going for threading.

Then for years I have literally stopped bothering about facial hair. I mean I did not wanted any sort of pain just to get rid of these natural hair.!

3. Eyebrow and Face Razor:

Then after entering the corporate world where grooming is integral part, I opted for shaving. Started with shaving blades that we get. Even after taking all precautionary steps and shaving with ultra slow pace, I ended up with some minor cuts.! So doped that too..!

These are the ones I used to use.!

4. Electric Eyebrow Trimmer:

This has been my friend since years now. This device has small blades meant for trimming eyebrow hair and works on battery cell. When you turn on the device, it vibrates and you just have to glide it across the face to remove the hair. Even though this is meant for eyebrows, works perfectly fine for other parts of your face as well. Blade doesn’t hurt or did not cause any discomfort till date.!

If you are looking for a multipurpose one that can be used on different parts of our body, check this one.

FAQs About Shaving Facial Hair:

  1. Does shaving hurts?

As mentioned above I had painful experience with shaving using razor. But electric razor works perfectly fine without any pain.

2. Does shaving increase the hair growth?

I think it depends on individual. For me, this neither increase the growth nor slowed down the growth.

3. Does hair grows after shaving is harder?

I personally feel it does not matter to me because be it soft or hard I am going to shave it off every time.! haha

4. Do you apply shaving cream before shaving?

When I used to use razor, I used to apply light textured facial cream. But for electric razor I prefer dry surface.

Hope this post helps. 🙂

If you have any query, please feel free to drop your questions in the comment section. Happy to answer..!

Have Yo Heard of Facial Vacuum Cups?

Do you love facial tools like I do??? If I heard yo say yes, **High Five**

This is my most recent addition to facial tool collection of mine – Facial Vacuum cups.

Before I start with this new bee, in case you would like to know my other two favourites, you can have a look by clicking on the links mentioned below..!

Gua Sha

Jade Roller

What is this cup made of?

It is made of Silicon. Hence they are also called Silicon vacuum cups too.

How do these cups work?

They work on the technique of suction pressure.

What are the benefits of using vacuum cups on face?

Facial cups are used to:

  1. Reduce wrinkles.
  2. Increase collagen production.
  3. Increase blood circulation.
  4. Fade away scars.
  5. to relax..!

How to use them?

One thing I must mention, when it comes to facial tools, everyone has their own way of using them. Depending on your skin needs/ types/ your comfort, you choose one.

This is my way using it. As it is hard to describe the movements, I have shot this video. You can watch ‘How to Use’ from . It starts at 2:07 🙂

Can it be used daily?

No. It should be used once or max twice a week.

Now the important part, the DO’s and Don’ts.

  1. Always start with cleansed face and apply good amount of facial oil before using the cups.
  2. Always press the cup with minimal pressure and move it gently.
  3. Glide the cup till the hairline.
  4. Always clean the cups after use.

  1. Do not press the cups hard as it will create more suction pressure to suck the skin. You might end up hurting your skin.
  2. Do not let the cup sit on your skin for long. Again this will harm your skin rather than doing good.
  3. Do not pull the cup.

These are the things I have learnt and follow while using facial cups. Hope you find this information useful..!

Do include them in your next ‘At Home Spa Session’..!

12 Inexpensive Things to Follow for #SkinGoals

Healthy and beautiful skin is everyone’s dream..! Today I am going to share or rather remind you of certain already known and easy things which will help you to achieve your #SkinGoals. If you are looking for any mention of skin care product, Nope, it definitely not going to include any sort of product recommendation..!

Curious to checkout the list? Let’s start..!

  1. Drink at least 3 litres of water a day:

I know, I know, almost all beauty videos, posts and especially celebrity skin secrets include this point. But trust me it works to a greater extent. Not just skin, it is good for your overall health. As we all know, our body is made up of majority of water content. Drinking water helps in keeping your skin hydrated from within, helps in proper functioning of organs annnddd most importantly, it helps to flush out toxins from our body. So don’t forget to sipping water once in a while, daily..!

2. Do not touch your face:

Yes, you heard that right. Unless and until your hands are properly cleansed and it’s super clean, do not touch your face. Come on, this pandemic has taught us how our hands can be a medium to cause health issues..! Isn’t it? Even though they may look clean to our n*ked eyes, they do contain germs. Touching your face with hands might transfer germs which in turn cause breakouts. So avoid it..!

3. Wash your face masks frequently:

Face masks are the new normal. I have seen people using a same face mask straight for a month without washing it. Ewww..! While the face mask is on, we sweat, we speak and it might transfer a bit of our saliva to the mask. A layer of polluted air, germs and what not a poor mask protects us from..! If we do not wash the mask before using it the next time, just think of the amount of germs that are cultivated in those masks..! Please use clean face mask every time to take care of your health and skin darling..!

4. Eat clean:

TBH, I am not someone who can follow this. I am a huge junk food lover. BUT, I make sure I avoid eating food that cause breakouts. Some are allergic to dairy, for some sugar cause breakouts and for some oily food cause harm. So I am not someone who would ask you to leave everything for the sake of it. Instead I would suggest you to avoid eating food that doesn’t suit your skin and body.

5. Sleep:

This is most underrated activity when it comes to healthy body, skin, mind or even for weight loss. Minimum 7 hours sleep is what we need to keep our overall health in check. While we are asleep body gets recharged (like literally). So make sure you get that good beauty sleep to get flawless skin.

6. Go to bed makeup free:

Always always take off your makeup before hitting the bed. Makeup products clog the facial pores which is why this sinful act cause breakouts..!

7. Change your pillow cases frequently:

When we sleep, we transfer the skincare products that we have applied, hair product, saliva to our pillow cases..! If we do not change the pillow cases, we are just harming our skin by playing with the germs that are there on the pillow cases. So clean pillow cases for clearer skin.

8. Choose the products wisely:

Do not blindly follow any trend or recommendations. A product that works for someone may or may not work for your skin. Always do a patch test before trying it on your whole face.

9. Clean your cellphone’s screen:

Cellphones are like the extended part of our body.! While we are talking over the phone, screen comes in contact with our face. If your screen is not clean, again we are transferring those germs to your face.! You are aware of the next story..! So to avoid these breakouts caused by phones, keep your cellphone screens clean.

10. Keep your hair away from face:

Our hair accumulate lot of pollution, dust and sweat. When they come in contact with our facial skin, tell me what happens!? Yes you are absolutely right, breakouts..!!

11. Follow simple CTM routine:

If you are not aware of this three letter mantra, here is the post that will help you. Especially the last step. That’s way more important to keep skin healthy and supple.

12. Keep your mind happy:

Yes you read it right. When you are not happy inside it shows on your face (like, literally), skin and body. To keep your mind stress free and happy, do something that makes your soul happy. Be it exercising, a quick walk, any hobby or even spending time with your family (furry members included). When you are happy inside, hello healthy skin..!

Story of How I Started My Schooling

If you have been following my videos on YouTube and you know Kannada, you are already aware of the stories about how I learnt English after moving to an English medium school and Hindi when I moved to Maharastra. When I talk about learning, it all started when I started schooling..!

Story of me joining a school is short but quite amusing. Wanna hear???

I am the elder kid and I used to be very stubborn back in those days. Like most of the kids of 90’s, even I was not at all pleased with the idea of going to school. I often made a big dramatic scene with all the crying and pleading, every morning..! So my dad decided to try a different method.

Just to add, I must say, parenting is difficult. In order to raise a kid right, either of the parents should be strict and one has to be a friendly. I mean two strict parents or two very leanient parents combo might not really succeed. Again, this is my point of view, you might have a different one. But this topic is always debatable.

Back to my story. In my home, mom is the strict one whereas my dad is my first friend, like literally. Wanna know why? You will soon..!

So my dad prioritised his dad duties over his office duties and decided to accompany me to my school. I made sure I continued my efforts to not to sit in school and made my dad take me back home within few minutes of staying at school. (I told you I was stubborn..!!) This continued for couple of days.

Third day dad thought of trying out something new. He became my bench partner (see, I told you he is literally my first friend touchwood) Those tiny chairs were so tiny, my sweet dad used to sit on those to give me company..!

Now enters my mom..!! (Dramatic sound in the background..!!)

It must be fifth or sixth day probably, day when my dad lifted me up and started walking towards school, I started crying and asking him to take me back home. He asked me to look back. I still remember what I saw – my mom was holding this big stick, standing right in front of my home asking me to come back, while moving the stick swiftly. Indicating the ‘warm welcome‘ that I will get if I choose to go back home..! Haha that scared me so much that I immediately stopped crying and went to school with dad.

As usual my dad sat along with me. While all other kids used to dance and sing, I used to hold my father’s hand tight and sit right next to him. I was scared that he might leave me in the school and go back to his office. I must really appreciate the fact that my dad is THE BEST. He took leave from his office just to be with me..! How many dads do that??? touchwood

That day was like the longest day of us at school. We didn’t know that there is a snack break in between. Where kids get to eat their snacks that they have brought along with them from home. So my dad and I did not had any snacks so we just sat in a corner, lost in our talks. A little boy came to us and offered his snacks. He had brought those sugary biscuits. I don’t remember his name or face so is my dad. But what my dad remembers is how he felt at that moment. At first dad thought he is such a kind boy..! Later he got to know how smart that boy was…!! That little boy told my dad “Uncle, take me also along with you..!” haha yes, those biscuits were bribe to get him out of the school. He knew this uncle takes his daughter out of school sooner so he thought of taking a chance..! Smart, isn’t it??

So this continued for some days. Where my dad used to be my bench mate. Then one day class teacher spoke to my dad and said “Sir, if you sit like this everyday, you will have to sit here for whole year..!” and she suggested him to leave while I am not paying attention.

I had started trusting dad that he will sit along with me daily, so I had started to dance and sing along with other kids. One fine day while I was lost in dance and music, my dad jumped out of the big window (that opened to the corridor) we had in the class and went back. While still dancing, I turn back to see the bench empty. OMG that must have been such lost feeling. I don’t remember the exact feelings that went in my mind and heart but I definitely remember me crying (well I can’t say like a kid, because I was a kid haha) Class teacher made sure I don’t run from school. But after a while when class got over and when I came out I was so so happy and relived to see my dad standing there waiting for me..!! (Oh I still have tears in my eyes while writing this..! )

So this is how I started going to school. When my sister started her schooling, I was her guiding angel haha. She used to cry too. But I was in the same school and her class teacher used to ask me to take care of my little sister. Which I was very happy to do, because it’s a nice feeling to have our own by our side, anytime, anywhere..! Isn’t it?

She used to sit with me on my bench just like dad did. While she used to be busy drawing butterflies, house, the sun and the moon, I used to attend the class. Awww I remember she used to show me her drawings too, while trying not to make lot of noise. I am so glad my class teachers were so sweet who never yelled at me for bringing my sister to class.! In fact all of my classmates were happy to see little one in the class. Precious days..!

So this was the story of how I joined the school..!!!

How was your first day at school??? Did you cry??? Any special mentions??? Do share your stories in the comment section. It will be a warm feeling trust me. A walk down such sweet memory lane is always a warm feeling..!
