New Member to My Skin & Hair Care Routine – Hydrosol

Last year while the world witnessed a lot of ‘New Normals’, lot of things changed in beauty industry as well. More people started leaning towards skincare and less on cosmetics or makeup products. While trying to know and try some chemical free natural skincare products, I came across this holy grail called – Hydrosol.

Let’s know what is product is all about. Shall we??

First and foremost let’s see what is Hydrosol?

Hydrosol is magical water ( I mean water based product with benefits which can work like magic) made from the distillation of fresh flowers, leaves, fruits and other plant material. Doesn’t that sound wow..!

So, there are multiple types of Hydrosol available right?

Yes. There are Hydrosol made of different flowers (my favourite is Rose), many leaves are used to make Hydrosol ( I liked curry leaves one so far!!) etc.

How is the consistency?

When I said it’s magical water, like literally. When it comes to consistency, it is as light as water.

What about fragrance? Are they strong smelling one??

They have more subtle scent mostly. Again depends on the variant. For example Rose Hydrosol is more soothing fragrant (if you like fragrance of Rose), curry leaves one is kind of moderate, Lavender one can fall on slightly stronger note.

Is it similar to essential oil? If not, how are they different from essential oils?

They have a lot in common with essential oil as Hydrosols are byproduct of essential oil manufacturing process.! What makes Hydrosol different is that they are way less concentrated as compared to essential oils.

Are they supposed to be used only for skin?

No. They can be used for both skin and hair.

How to use Hydrosol?

You can spritz Hydrosol on face like toner. Can be sprayed on scalp for the betterment of scalp and hair health. It can also be used as a base for your skin care and hair care DIYs (That’s more like my deal. I love DIYs. Don’t you?? ) Plus, some Hydrosol with slightly stronger smell can be used as body mist.!

Let’s talk about most important point – What are the benefits of Hydrosol?

Hydrosol can cleanse your skin, maintain pH level and calm your skin. If you have itchy scalp, Hydrosol can help you get healthy scalp. Some are even used for hair growth as well..! Hydrosol can also be used for relaxation..!

Things to take care of before using Hydrosol.

Even though studies have proved that Hydrosol doesn’t really have any side effects, I would still ask you to do a patch test before using it. That’s because our skin reacts differently to different products, even if it natural/ chemical free one..!

Facial Hair Removal Techniques I Have Tried and One That Worked

Facial hair, it is as natural as our hair on head..! Simple. Just like it’s individual’s choice to whether to keep it as it is or to shave it off the hair on head, it is one’s choice to take care of facial hair.

Hair type and growth rate depends on individual and underlying health condition. Some have very less or no facial hair, some have excess hair growth due to hormonal imbalance. I fall in the category where the growth rate is moderate. *touchwood*. So once a month works the best for me.

I personally don’t like to keep it as it is hence I choose to get it removed in a timely manner. In this post I am going to share the methods I have used so far (honestly not many methods) and one that works well for me.

  1. Turmeric Face Packs:

You know how we love Ayurvedic remedies when it come to skin and hair. Initially my mom didn’t allow me to get rid of facial hair. Because she knew it would be painful and she was worried that it might increase the hair growth. But you know when you are a teen, you usually tend to bother a lot about your looks than usual.! I was like any other teen, bit embarrassed about my facial hair. (Now when I think about it, they were not even that long to get noticed. But back in those days I used to feel people are looking at my moustache while talking to me..!Typical teenager..! )

Back to business, Ayurvedic remedies are something my mom chose for me. She used to make these face packs for me which happened to have ingredients which are said to reduce the hair growth.! I used to religiously apply those packs. Even though I did see slow change in the growth of facial hair but that did not help me get that ‘clean look’ I was looking for.!

2. Threading:

Then when I started complaining about the packs, mom took to the parlour just to give me the glimpse of how threading process is like and the results of it.! I remember how the parlour lady took the thread and pulled the facial hair of her customer. Even though the result was ‘clean’, it was all red and bumpy..! That was scary for me.! So I did not opt for it.

But I took (read it as stole) mom’s tweezers and thought of giving it a try by myself. Oops when I pulled a strand from my upper lips, I was left with teary eyes and bumps. That’s when I appreciated my decision of not going for threading.

Then for years I have literally stopped bothering about facial hair. I mean I did not wanted any sort of pain just to get rid of these natural hair.!

3. Eyebrow and Face Razor:

Then after entering the corporate world where grooming is integral part, I opted for shaving. Started with shaving blades that we get. Even after taking all precautionary steps and shaving with ultra slow pace, I ended up with some minor cuts.! So doped that too..!

These are the ones I used to use.!

4. Electric Eyebrow Trimmer:

This has been my friend since years now. This device has small blades meant for trimming eyebrow hair and works on battery cell. When you turn on the device, it vibrates and you just have to glide it across the face to remove the hair. Even though this is meant for eyebrows, works perfectly fine for other parts of your face as well. Blade doesn’t hurt or did not cause any discomfort till date.!

FAQs About Shaving Facial Hair:

  1. Does shaving hurts?

As mentioned above I had painful experience with shaving using razor. But electric razor works perfectly fine without any pain.

2. Does shaving increase the hair growth?

I think it depends on individual. For me, this neither increase the growth nor slowed down the growth.

3. Does hair grows after shaving is harder?

I personally feel it does not matter to me because be it soft or hard I am going to shave it off every time.! haha

4. Do you apply shaving cream before shaving?

When I used to use razor, I used to apply light textured facial cream. But for electric razor I prefer dry surface.

What is this cup made of?

It is made of Silicon. Hence they are also called Silicon vacuum cups too.

How do these cups work?

They work on the technique of suction pressure.

What are the benefits of using vacuum cups on face?

Facial cups are used to:

  1. Reduce wrinkles.
  2. Increase collagen production.
  3. Increase blood circulation.
  4. Fade away scars.
  5. to relax..!

How to use them?

One thing I must mention, when it comes to facial tools, everyone has their own way of using them. Depending on your skin needs/ types/ your comfort, you choose one.

Can it be used daily?

No. It should be used once or max twice a week.

Now the important part, the DO’s and Don’ts.

Do’s:

  1. Always start with cleansed face and apply good amount of facial oil before using the cups.
  2. Always press the cup with minimal pressure and move it gently.
  3. Glide the cup till the hairline.
  4. Always clean the cups after use.

Don’ts:

  1. Do not press the cups hard as it will create more suction pressure to suck the skin. You might end up hurting your skin.
  2. Do not let the cup sit on your skin for long. Again this will harm your skin rather than doing good.
  3. Do not pull the cup.

12 Inexpensive Things to Follow for #SkinGoals

Healthy and beautiful skin is everyone’s dream..! Today I am going to share or rather remind you of certain already known and easy things which will help you to achieve your #SkinGoals. If you are looking for any mention of skin care product, Nope, it definitely not going to include any sort of product recommendation..!

  1. Drink at least 3 litres of water a day:

I know, I know, almost all beauty videos, posts and especially celebrity skin secrets include this point. But trust me it works to a greater extent. Not just skin, it is good for your overall health. As we all know, our body is made up of majority of water content. Drinking water helps in keeping your skin hydrated from within, helps in proper functioning of organs annnddd most importantly, it helps to flush out toxins from our body. So don’t forget to sipping water once in a while, daily..!

2. Do not touch your face:

Yes, you heard that right. Unless and until your hands are properly cleansed and it’s super clean, do not touch your face. Come on, this pandemic has taught us how our hands can be a medium to cause health issues..! Isn’t it? Even though they may look clean to our n*ked eyes, they do contain germs. Touching your face with hands might transfer germs which in turn cause breakouts. So avoid it..!

3. Wash your face masks frequently:

Face masks are the new normal. I have seen people using a same face mask straight for a month without washing it. Ewww..! While the face mask is on, we sweat, we speak and it might transfer a bit of our saliva to the mask. A layer of polluted air, germs and what not a poor mask protects us from..! If we do not wash the mask before using it the next time, just think of the amount of germs that are cultivated in those masks..! Please use clean face mask every time to take care of your health and skin darling..!

4. Eat clean:

TBH, I am not someone who can follow this. I am a huge junk food lover. BUT, I make sure I avoid eating food that cause breakouts. Some are allergic to dairy, for some sugar cause breakouts and for some oily food cause harm. So I am not someone who would ask you to leave everything for the sake of it. Instead I would suggest you to avoid eating food that doesn’t suit your skin and body.

5. Sleep:

This is most underrated activity when it comes to healthy body, skin, mind or even for weight loss. Minimum 7 hours sleep is what we need to keep our overall health in check. While we are asleep body gets recharged (like literally). So make sure you get that good beauty sleep to get flawless skin.

6. Go to bed makeup free:

Always always take off your makeup before hitting the bed. Makeup products clog the facial pores which is why this sinful act cause breakouts..!

7. Change your pillow cases frequently:

When we sleep, we transfer the skincare products that we have applied, hair product, saliva to our pillow cases..! If we do not change the pillow cases, we are just harming our skin by playing with the germs that are there on the pillow cases. So clean pillow cases for clearer skin.

8. Choose the products wisely:

Do not blindly follow any trend or recommendations. A product that works for someone may or may not work for your skin. Always do a patch test before trying it on your whole face.

9. Clean your cellphone’s screen:

Cellphones are like the extended part of our body.! While we are talking over the phone, screen comes in contact with our face. If your screen is not clean, again we are transferring those germs to your face.! You are aware of the next story..! So to avoid these breakouts caused by phones, keep your cellphone screens clean.

10. Keep your hair away from face:

Our hair accumulate lot of pollution, dust and sweat. When they come in contact with our facial skin, tell me what happens!? Yes you are absolutely right, breakouts..!!

11. Follow simple CTM routine:

If you are not aware of this three letter mantra, here is the post that will help you. Especially the last step. That’s way more important to keep skin healthy and supple.

12. Keep your mind happy:

Yes you read it right. When you are not happy inside it shows on your face (like, literally), skin and body. To keep your mind stress free and happy, do something that makes your soul happy. Be it exercising, a quick walk, any hobby or even spending time with your family (furry members included). When you are happy inside, hello healthy skin..!

DIY Papaya Face Pack for Sensitive Skin

Papaya is one of my favourite fruits, not because how it tastes because how good it is to our skin. :p

Papaya is quite moisturising in nature. Good news is it can be used by all skin types by mixing it with right ingredient. If you are a dry skinned beauty or you have oily skin, you can checkout these DIY recipes of homemade Papaya face packs:

DIY Papaya Face Pack for Oily Skin

Now that we have seen how we can use Papaya to treat Dry skin, let’s see the recipe of one more papaya pack that is specifically for oily skinned beauties.

When our facial glands produce more natural oil/ sebum, it makes our skin look oily/ greasy. So the main target of this face pack is to reduce this oiliness without making our skin dry.! So this face pack maintains the balance between making skin look matte and keep it moisturised.

  1. Mashed Papaya.
  2. Lemon Juice or any citric fruit. of your choice.

DIY Papaya Face Pack to Treat Dry Skin

The other day I bought one of my favourite fruits – papaya. More than eating it, I like to use it in my DIYs. haha

So, while I was doing my DIY face pack for my dry skin, I thought of sharing the recipe with my beautiful readers. Also, I have face pack options for oily and sensitive skinned beauties on my mind, which I am going to share on Mygirlypedia in a day or two.! Let’s start with face pack recipe for dry skin.

What is the primary skin issue of dry skin? Absolutely no brownie points for guessing the answer alright..! Yes, it is dryness.. ! :p

To serve that primary purpose and to serve some more skin benefits, I would love to recommend this to dry skinned beauties.

All we need are three ingredients.

  1. Papaya (I meannn, obvio)
  2. Milk
  3. Honey

Let’s get to know the benefits of each ingredient:

  1. Papaya:

2-3 table spoons of mashed papaya. Benefits are:

  1. Hydrates skin.
  2. Has anti-aging properties.
  3. Gently exfoliates skin. 
  4. Makes skin baby soft.
  5. Removes tan. 

2. Milk:

  1. Moistures.
  2. Lightens and brightens skin.
  3. Helps to reduce wrinkles.

3. Honey:

  1. Moisturises skin without making it oily.
  2. Fades scar.
  3. Antibacterial in nature.

As you can make out, this DIY is full of hydration and moisture to treat dryness…! Doesn’t this pack look yummy..!!

Take all the ingredients in the 2:1:1 (Papaya, milk, honey) quantity and mix well. Apply the face pack on cleansed skin. Let it work for around 10 – 15 minutes. Wash with warm water followed by good moisturiser to lock in all the goodness..!

DIY Scrub for Soft Healthy Skin and to Reduce Cellulite

Just like our facial skin, body also needs scrubbing. Scrub to get rid of dead skin cells and to maintain healthy skin.

Today I am sharing one of my favourite homemade body scrub recipe to get rid of dead skin cells and cellulite. If you are wondering what cellulite is, it is the dimpled-looking skin that commonly occurs in the thigh region. As much as we embrace these little things, yet times it may embarrass us. In case you are thinking of a safe way to get rid of it, here is the quick and easy recipe.

We need two ingredients for it:

  1. Coffee.
  2. Rose Gel.

Let me quickly tell you the benefits of each ingredient.

Coffee:

  1. If you are a coffee lover like me, you know how calming its fragrance is. It is proven that coffee in deed has calming effect on our senses.
  2. Reduces cellulite..!!
  3. Treats sunburn.
  4. Has Anti-aging properties.
  5. Has Anti-inflammatory properties.

Rose Gel:

  1. Brings in natural glow.
  2. Hydrates.
  3. Moisturises.
  4. Calms skin.
  5. Makes skin soft.

How to prepare:

Add them in 3:1 ratio. If you take 3 spoons of coffee powder, take one spoon of rose gel. This is because, if you take more gel or dual amount, the mixture becomes too runny and becomes difficult to use.

How to use:

Use it over cleansed body. Gently massage in circular motion. Leave it on your skin for a while before you wash it with warm water.

It’s About Dry Brushing Your Face

Exfoliation is a mandatory step in skincare to keep skin healthy and glowy. Exfoliation is that process where we remove the dead skin layer to get soft and healthy skin. 

While we know many types of exfoliation, do you know this method called dry brushing?

Dry brushing as the name suggests involves a brush, that helps in gently exfoliating your skin. While dry brushing can be done for the whole body as well as face, I am dedicating this particular post only for facial dry brushing.

How to Do Facial Dry Brushing?

  1. Please make sure you take a brush with soft bristles. 
  2. Start with dry skin (hence the name!). No product required. It should be bare skin. 
  3. Start from forehead move in the direction of your heart, with gentle strokes. It should be like forehead, bridge of your nose and then towards hairline.  
  4. Now moving towards cheekbones, brush slowly towards your chin. 
  5. Once you are done brushing, cleanse your face with warm water to remove residue of dead skin left.
  6. Now the MOST IMPORTANT step. Moisturising your skin.! Pamper your skin with a good moisturiser. 

How frequently can I use dry brush?

Once or max twice a week.

Benefits of Dry Brushing:

  1. If done with minimum pressure, it’s super relaxing. 
  2. Gently exfoliates and removes dead skin cells.
  3. Helps in lymphatic drainage.
  4. Reduces wrinkles.
  5. Helps in improving blood circulation thus gives that natural flush. 

Things to Take Care:

  1. If you have skin issues like rosacea or psoriasis, kindly avoid dry brushing. As dry brushing can worsen the condition.!
  2. Do not over do this treatment. If overly done, it can irritate skin. 
  3. At the end of the day it is one of the exfoliation methods. If done more than recommended, it will dry your skin.

How I Make The Most of Sheet Masks

Sheet masks have a special place in the hearts of all skincare enthusiasts out there. They are super easy to use and of course they are pretty beneficials to skin. 

If you are living under rock, these are the sheets drenched in serums which are like magic potion to our skin. You just have to place these sheets on your face for 10 – 15 minutes to let it work.  For any other FAQ about sheet masks or to know more about sheet masks here is one helpful post. 

Now that we know the sheet mask usage, let me tell you how I make most out of a sheet mask..! 

  1. Face serum before putting on the sheet mask.! 

Sheet mask package contains more serum than required.! I love taking some serum on my finger tips and massage it to my face with circular motion. Once the serum is absorbed, I put on sheet mask and let it work. 

  1. Jade roller while sheet mask is on:

While the mask is on, I love using jade roller over it to make the whole treatment extra relaxing. Also, that helps in better absorption of serum.! 

  1. I use it as a hand serum:

I also apply the serum on my hands because hands are the first thing people notice when you introduce yourself to new people you meet.! Hands need care too.! And nowadays, in the pandemic, we frequently wash our hands and use sanitisers which are quite drying. To add that hydration, I like using serum on my hands for that extra pampering.!

  1. As a feet serum.! 

They say feet are most ignored body part.! To show that extra love to my feet, I apply a layer of serum to my feet and let it get absorbed to get soft feet.! 

  1. Finishing up with a layer of serum:

I always save some serum for the end. Post 10-15 minutes of application of sheet mask, I gently remove it. Let the serum get sinked into my skin. Post that I apply one more layer of left over serum on to my face and neck. Because, why not? haha
