New Member to My Skin & Hair Care Routine – Hydrosol

Last year while the world witnessed a lot of ‘New Normals’, lot of things changed in beauty industry as well. More people started leaning towards skincare and less on cosmetics or makeup products. While trying to know and try some chemical free natural skincare products, I came across this holy grail called – Hydrosol.

Let’s know what is product is all about. Shall we??

First and foremost let’s see what is Hydrosol?

Hydrosol is magical water ( I mean water based product with benefits which can work like magic) made from the distillation of fresh flowers, leaves, fruits and other plant material. Doesn’t that sound wow..!

So, there are multiple types of Hydrosol available right?

Yes. There are Hydrosol made of different flowers (my favourite is Rose), many leaves are used to make Hydrosol ( I liked curry leaves one so far!!) etc.

How is the consistency?

When I said it’s magical water, like literally. When it comes to consistency, it is as light as water.

What about fragrance? Are they strong smelling one??

They have more subtle scent mostly. Again depends on the variant. For example Rose Hydrosol is more soothing fragrant (if you like fragrance of Rose), curry leaves one is kind of moderate, Lavender one can fall on slightly stronger note.

Is it similar to essential oil? If not, how are they different from essential oils?

They have a lot in common with essential oil as Hydrosols are byproduct of essential oil manufacturing process.! What makes Hydrosol different is that they are way less concentrated as compared to essential oils.

Are they supposed to be used only for skin?

No. They can be used for both skin and hair.

How to use Hydrosol?

You can spritz Hydrosol on face like toner. Can be sprayed on scalp for the betterment of scalp and hair health. It can also be used as a base for your skin care and hair care DIYs (That’s more like my deal. I love DIYs. Don’t you?? ) Plus, some Hydrosol with slightly stronger smell can be used as body mist.!

Let’s talk about most important point – What are the benefits of Hydrosol?

Hydrosol can cleanse your skin, maintain pH level and calm your skin. If you have itchy scalp, Hydrosol can help you get healthy scalp. Some are even used for hair growth as well..! Hydrosol can also be used for relaxation..!

Things to take care of before using Hydrosol.

Even though studies have proved that Hydrosol doesn’t really have any side effects, I would still ask you to do a patch test before using it. That’s because our skin reacts differently to different products, even if it natural/ chemical free one..!

Chemical Free Shampoo Recipe By My Grandma

When it comes to hair care or skin care grandma’s recipes are the best. They never fail to amaze us every time we use them. Today I am going to share one of such wonderful hair care recipes from my dear grandma.

Finding a shampoo that works or us is as difficult as finding our soulmate. Even if we succeed in finding one, the fact remains the same that the shampoo does contain some chemicals that might harm our hair in the long run. So, what’s the solution then??

No wo’rries honey, I am going to share a solution. It is a DIY (Do It Yourself) Shampoo recipe. It has no chemicals only solutions for all your hair problems.!!

All you need are 3 ingredients. Lets make our shampoo. Ready?

1. Amla/Indian gooseberry:
Rich in vitamin C, amla is widely used in Ayurveda for hair & skincare. Major benefits being:
1. Reduces hair fall.
2. Makes hair strong.
3. Reduces dandruff.
4. Treats premature greying.
5. Promotes hair growth.
6. Treats scalp infections.

2. Reetha:
Ayurveda says dandruff is the real culprit when it comes to hair fall. Reetha helps in controlling hair fall by removing dandruff. It has antibacterial & anti-fungal properties which helps in fighting dandruff & hair fall. Reetha also adds moisture to scalp them making it feel healthy & supple.

3. Sheekakai:
This is a well known hair care product. Benefits of using Shekakai are:
1. Adds shine & softness to hair.
2. For stronger & thicker hair
3. Removes hair lice.
a. Removes dandruff
5. Heals infection.
6. Removes hair loss issue.
7. Nourishes hair follicles.
8. Avoids premature ageing.

How to make?
Its easy. Mix these ingredients in a bowl. Add water. Now boil the mixture.
Keep this mixture overnight so that the water gets time to absorb all the goodness of these  ingredients. Your shampoo is ready to be used the next day. Yeeaahh!!

PS: Filter out the ingredients before using for hassel free use of shampoo.

These are my learning through personal experience:
1. Make sure you never let the shampoo come in contact with your eyes. If you do, you will be left with red eyes because it burns (nothing severe but yes its’ better to avoid).

2. It leaves your hair soft. You don’t need to use conditioner post this shampoo. Thanks to Reetha and shikakai. So cool huun!

3. If you have oiled your hair, you will need more quantity of shampoo. This is the same case with any other hair cleaner!

4. If you have not filtered out the ingredients, there might be some ingredients stuck to your hair. No worries, once you are done washing, once the hair is dry, you can gently comb your hair to remove them.

Today, I am sharing this recipe of this easy breezy hair mask that will help you get healthy, shiny hair anddd healthy scalp.

As I said it is pretty easy to prepare and use. You need 3 ingredients. Name of the mask is by its colour. Oh and yes I am the one who took the privilege of naming this mask huun..! 😉

  • It can be as simple as water

Hair Mask to Treat All Hair Problems

Other day I started trying out this hair mask which is one solution for all hair problems. Sounds interesting?

Without any further delay let’s see what are the ingredients that you need to prepare this mask. Ready? All right..!!

Ingredients:

Now we should know the role of each ingredient in this hair pack. Here are the benefits of each of them.

  1. Onion Juice

This is a magical potion. Onion juice has lot of benefits to offer for your hair. I have a whole separate video shot to list down the benefits of it.

Hair fall:

While there are multiple reasons that cause hair fall. Including improper diet/ lifestyle, stress, hormonal changes, pollution, chemicals etc. One of the major reason can be hair follicles not receiving proper nutrition.

Curd is rich in calcium and protein. Our biggest nightmare, hair fall. Hair fall can be treated by using curd on our hair.

Hair conditioning :

Curd acts as a natural conditioner. If you have dry damaged hair, applying curd will do the job of a conditioner.

Dandruff:

Fungus cause dandruff. It makes scalp flaky. Which in turn result in hair fall.! Curd has anti-fungal properties that will help in saying bye bye to dandruff and also avoid it from getting further.

Shiny Hair:

Who doesn’t love healthy and shiny hair? Curd is rich in vitamins, fatty acids and essential amino acids. That’s how curd provides nutrition to hair and make them shiny and lustrous. 

3. Bhringraj Powder:

Bhringraj powder is well known for effective action on hair and scalp. Thus it is widely used in Ayurveda to treat many hair issues.

Hair Growth:

Bhringraj powder stimulates scalp cells thus helps in promoting hair growth.

Dandruff:

Bhringraj powder has anti-microbial properties. Thus makes it effective to treat dandruff and lice.

Thinning and Premature Greying of Hair:

Summer has a special place in my heart. I’m sure it does in most of your hearts too. Even though the heat might make us go crazy sometimes, it brings so much joy of its own. One major thing I remember is, the summer holidays. I as a kid used to look forward to enjoy summer breaks. Where my mom used to get us ice creams, Rasna (a famous drinks among kids those days) on her own. We didn’t even had to beg much. haha.   • Vitamin A and C are more important when it comes to maintain good skin and hair. Mangoes have both these vitamins in them. Applying mango pulp to hair adds moisture and shine.

How to prepare mango hair mask:

All you need to do is take the pulp and squeeze. Apply the juice and pulp to your hair. Keep it for 15-20 minutes before washing it.

  • Similarly, if you are worried about dry skin, apply mashed mango pulp to your face to add moisture.
  • Vitamin C is required to maintain collagen level. Collagen is responsible for skin elasticity and avoiding wrinkles. By consuming a cup of mango everyday helps in improving skin’s texture.
  • Maintain health of facial pores is what is important to maintain good facial skin. Clogged pores are the biggest culprit to cause breakouts. Applying mango pulp to face helps in unclogging pores and thus keeping pimples at bay.
  • Not just the pulp, even the seed can be helpful in order to improve the health of our hair. Mango seed oil can help with reducing hair fall and greying of hair.

How to prepare mango seed oil at home:

Remove the pulp and dip the mango seed in any oil of your choice, like for example coconut/ sesame oil. Place this container under sunlight for some days. Using this concoction regularly, can help you get healthy hair.

  • Vitamin A in the mango helps in adding shine to hair, plus it helps in reducing dandruff when applied.
  • Mango also has vitamin E in it. When we apply mango pulp on to our scalp, this vitamin helps in the scalp circulation thus boosting hair growth.
  • If you have blemishes or dark spots on your face, all you need to do is to apply mango pulp on the effected area. With regular use, it is proved that mango can reduce the appearance of dark spots or blemishes.

Tips to Take Care of Oily Scalp and Dry Hair Combination

Just like our facial skin types, our scalps are also proven to be of different types. Skin that secrets more natural oil is termed as oily skin. Same way, the scalp that produces more natural oil is termed as oily scalp.

I also have the oily scalp. Due to which, the scalp feels so oily just after couple of days of hair wash. The hair looks so flat. That’s when we call ‘a bad hair day’…!!!

There are multiple combinations of hair and scalp. It’s not mandatory that if you have oily scalp, the hair should be oily or smooth.

Yet times, girls even face the issues(read it as confusing hair issues), where their scalp is oily but they have really dry hair. Ahhh…!!! If they try to follow home remedies for dry hair, in order to restore moisture, they are going to end up making their scalp even more oilier and visa versa. In deed tricky. Isn’t it???

Well, I have some super easy handy tips to take care of this combination. If you also have oily scalp and dry hair, jump in…!!!

Mild shampoos are your friends in this mission:

You will exactly understand the pain of taking head bath regularly(especially if you have long locks like mine), when you have oily scalp. When you fall into oily scalped category, you know you got to wash your hair frequently in order to make your hair look fresh and bouncy.

But it is not a good idea to wash hair frequently, if you have dry hair. Because every time you wash your hair, the natural oil is removed by the shampoo…!!!

In order to solve this tricky query, opt for a mild shampoo. Using which, the oily scalp is cleaned and the moisture of the hair is not sucked out.

Forget anything but not the conditioner:

Conditioner is a must, post washing your tresses. Why??? Shampoo absorbs the natural oil from hair. Conditioner on the other hand, provides moisture to hair. Hence your hair can say – bye bye dryness…!!!

Important point here is – do not apply conditioner to your scalp. Check the post about ‘How to wash your hair right’, for more info.

Hair masks ONLY for hair:

Hair is dry because it lacks moisture. In order to add moisture, you can use some amazing natural home made hair packs. Check this post for different recipes of hair masks you can try out.

When I say only for hair, you got to follow that strictly. As the scalp is already oily, you don’t want to clog it even more. Which results in hair fall.

So, you just have to apply hair pack on your hair strands, avoiding the scalp. You can use a clean towel, plastic or aluminum sheets to wrap your hair. Post half an hour so, you can wash your hair and scalp. Thus it adds moisture to your dry hair and without harming the scalp.

Exfoliation:

Just the way you treat dry hair with moisture, treat your oily scalp with little amount of exfoliation. Just like your face or body skin cells, scalp also need exfoliation to remove dead skin cells. Thus unclogging the pores, stimulating blood circulation and thus promoting hair growth.

There are multiple scalp exfoliators available in the market. If you want to prepare one at home, brown sugar, oatmeal, baking soda or coffee can be used as one. Mix any of these ingredients with oil and apply on scalp. Gently massage and wash scalp with luke warm water. This will help in improving scalp’s health without drying your hair.

Hot Oil Massage:

I just love hot oil massage for my hair. Especially when my mom gives me one. It’s so relaxing….!!!

Along with cooling your nerves, hot oil massage is good for your scalp and hair health. Even if the scalp is oily, it needs extra hydration. Which will be provided by a hot oil massage.

A good hot oil massage using oils like coconut oil, also helps in stimulating hair growth and keep the scalp and hair in a good condition.

Brush your hair daily:

A study was conducted to prove that garlic in diet can help in reducing the weight. Thus if you are on the way to weight loss, do include garlic in your diet. What’s more happier than reducing weight by eating. Isn’t it???

The good news is, you don’t have to spend money on mosquito repellent any more. Make one at home with less cost. Ingredients required are – garlic(obviously), Petroleum jelly and beeswax. Mix them well to form the lotion. In case you do not like the smell of it, add any essential oil of your choice. and tada you have your customised mosquito repellent.

Pests too Hate Garlic:

If you love gardening and thinking of which pesticides to buy next, try this out. With garlic oil, mineral oil, water and liquid soap – make one and spray it on plants. Pests hate garlic so they don’t dare to harm your little green friends.
