Causes and Remedies to Treat Dark Underarms

When the skin covering our underarm area is few shades darker than our skin tone, that is what we call dark underarms. Yet times, dark underarms can lower the fun and confidence while we are in sleeveless outfits. We tend to hesitate to throw our hands in the air and be free, if we have darker underarms. This post is going to help you with that.

What Causes Dark Underarms:

They say prevention is better than cure. In order to prevent further darkening, let’s see what are the things that are causing dark underarms.

  • Dead skin:
Like facial skin, skin covering our body also needs exfoliation. Reason being the accumulation of dark skin cells. As the dead skin accumulate, they make skin look dull and dark.
  • Shaving:
Shaving cuts the hair, it doesn’t remove the hair from roots. Once we shave, the hair follicles are still there. They make the skin look slightly darker.
  • Deodorant:
I agree that a deodorant is a must to smell good, but I always prefer and suggest to use perfume over a deodorant. Using perfume over the outfit is much better than using it straight on skin. Chemicals in the deodorants can cause skin darkening, if used for longer period of time.
  • Hyper-pigmentation:
It is a skin condition where the production of melanin (responsible for skin tone) is slightly higher at certain part as compared to the other parts of the body. In this case the extra amount of melanin produced, makes skin look darker. Which we usually call dark patches.
  • Tight Clothes:
This might come as a surprise. But skin covering under arm area is slightly thin. The friction caused by the tight clothes can irritate the are underarms and result in discoloration.
  • Bacterial Infection:
Due to lack of hygiene, there might be infection caused by bacteria.
  • Smoker’s Melanosis:
Smoking kills. It also ruins the skin condition. Smoker’s Melanosis is a condition caused by tobacco where the underarms gets darker.
  • Sun exposure:
Not only the underarms, if we get exposed to direct sunlight for longer period, we might end up with sun burns or tanning on the exposed area.
  • Hormonal Issues:
If you are under any medications or there is fluctuation in hormones, there is a chance that the skin gets these dark patches.
  • Skin Disorders:
There are certain skin disorders which result in dark patches.

How to Cure Dark Underarms:

Now that you know most of the causes for nasty patches, you are half way there. You now know what not to do and what to do to get brighter, healthy underarm skin.!

  • Waxing Over Shaving. When we wax, the hair strands are removed from their roots. So the skin won’t look dark.
  • As mentioned above, use perfumes on your outfits rather than using it on your skin. But please make sure the perfume won’t leave any stains on your outfit. You need to consider this point especially when it is oil based one.
  • Try to avoid wearing tight clothes. Not just because of the dark patches, but also sometimes it causes irritation to small blood veins. Which might also end up causing further more skin issues. Choose free, loose clothes. Let your skin breath.
  • Maintaining a good hygiene is the key. Shave the hair on the underarm area frequently. Use talcum powder to keep the area dry and free from bacteria.
  • Apply sunscreen on to your underarms if you are going out in sun wearing sleeveless outfits, where the area is going to be exposed directly to sun.
  • Scrubbing away the dead cells can make the skin look fresh and bright, it includes the skin covering underarms too. Regular scrubbing the underarm area can give you good results.
  • Try some homemade masks using brightening agents like curd or lemon. Apply curd on to the area in need and wash with water after 10 minutes. Lemon juice is slightly acidic and if you have dry or any wounds on the area, lemon juice might cause slight burning sensation. But with regular use, you can get rid of dark patches.
  • If the condition didn’t improve despite of following these remedies, please see a good dermatologist. Because if the issue is inside the body (like hormones or skin disorder), a good doctor’s help would surely help.

For The Dark Patches Around The Mouth

You must have noticed or might be facing this skin issue – dark patches. Also called hyperpigmentation. Especially around mouth area. You guys know that melanin is something that defines the tone of our skin. If the melanin content is high at some spots than usual, causes hyperpigmentation.

There are multiple reasons why this skin issue occurs. Majorly,

Sun exposure:

Spots caused by more exposure to direct sun is called sun spots. These are dark brown spots that might take time to appear visibly dark on your skin. But once they are there, they are quite hard to remove completely. A good care with the help of appropriate creams and scrubs is what it takes.

Melasma/Chloasma:

This is caused due to hormonal changes. They usually appear on forehead, cheeks and upper lips.

Due to skin breakage:

This is quite common dark spot faced by many. This is due to pimples, burnt skin or any skin abrasion. These dark patches are high in melanin. Takes long time to fade.

Weather:

If you have noticed, our skin behaves differently in different weather. For example, skin lacks hydration during winter.

Some of us tend to wet the lips and around it with saliva. But, unfortunately saliva makes skin even more dry, as it evaporates quickly.

If you also have this habit, stop doing that…!!!

If you feel your skin needs instant hydration, carry a travel size good moisturizer with you in your little handbag. Apply it whenever you feel the need.

Because more dry the skin, more chances of pigmentation.

Considering the skin around mouth is way more thin and delicate, let’s see how we can take care of it:

Exfoliate daily:

When I say daily, it should definitely with mild scrub. Because the more you scrub, more harm you are doing to your skin. But, scrubbing in moderation is necessary for good skin.

Mild scrubs on other hand, gently exfoliate and remove impurities plus dead skin cells. Doing this everyday, on the effected area, should help you lighten the skin tone.

Use concealers:

Concealers are the ones which helps to hide skin issues. (More about concealers here. Type, how to use etc etc.)

Try a moisturizing skin whitening cream:

Moisturizing, because skin that is dry is prone to suffer from such patches.

While buying a skin whitening cream, look for below ingredients:

  • Vitamin C
  • Kojic Acid
  • Arbutin
  • Azelaic acid
  • Licorice Acid
  • Niacinamide
  • Grape seed extracts.

These ingredients help in reducing the melanin production in your skin. This making your skin look pale.

Try out below home made packs:

Here are some natural bleaching agents you can find at your home. You just have to apply a layer of fresh juice or mixture of ingredient with water to form paste. Wash with warm water.

  • Lemon Juice
  • Potato Juice
  • Turmeric mask
  • Cucumber Juice
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Tomato Juice
  • Milk Cream

Laser treatment:

If you have severe patches, post a good consultation, you can go for laser treatment. This treatment is going to lighten the patches. But couple of things to consider here are – it is expensive and it is not permanent.

Dermatologist:

If none of these home remedies work, kindly consult a good dermatologist to get your skin issues resolved with prescribed medication.

Concealers I Recommend For That Flawless Look

Hello pretty,

In one of my set of posts for makeup beginners, I had included a whole post for this flaw covering product called concealer. Yes,this is the product used to get flawless skin look. It covers skin problems like blemishes, spots, dark patches etc.

Everyone has bad skin day. These unwanted pimples can come anytime. Uhhh. So keeping these concealers handy would be a wise choice.

I do have couple of concealers with me. They are from my favorite brands – Lakme and Maybelline. Which I’m gonna quickly review now.

Lakme Absolute Color Intense Concealer:

There are 3 different shades available.

  • Honey (05)
  • Medium (03)
  • Fair (01)

I chose the shade 01.

Best part it comes with SPF 20. So, hello summer. 😉

Price:

600 INR for 3.6 g. I bought it from Nykaa for 413 INR. Thanks to the sale with 25% off.

Shelf Life:

2 years.

Packing:

It comes in a bullet packing just like a lipstick. The grey and silver packing is kind of sober yet attractive. The transparent plastic cap is tight but not so sturdy. I had broken it ones. This is my second tube. So you don’t have to worry of any spillage but you should be cautious that you won’t break the cap.

The twist and apply technique is very handy. You don’t have to use any applicator as such.

The transparent cap also makes it easy to keep an eye on the product left. The shade number is printed at the bottom of the pack. Which helps in differentiating the shade.

Fragrance:

It has a faint fragrance of candies. Smells yummy.

Consistency:

The product is creamy. The results or finish it gives is a matte finish. But it doesn’t dry the skin.

Coverage:

This is the main point for concealer. The coverage it provides is light to medium. I can’t say it totally hides the pimple marks, but it make them appear faint. But this is good enough to cover dark circles.

What I loved about Lakme Absolute Color Intense Concealer:

  • It has SPF 20.
  • Coverage is good.
  • Travel friendly packing.
  • Twist and apply parking is handy.
  • Availability.
  • Value for money. Little goes long way so the quantity of product for the price is good.

What I didn’t like:

  • Shade availability is very less.
  • Second concealer I absolutely love is the one from Maybelline.

Maybelline Newyork Fit Me Concealer:

Shades available:

4 shades are available.

  • Light (10)
  • Sand (20)
  • Medium (25)
  • Cafe (30)

I chose the shade Sand (20) for me.

Price:

525 INR For 6.8 ml. (Buy from here)

Shelf life:

3 years

Packing:

It comes in a tube packing like lipgloss. The transparent plastic tube is sturdy. The black cap is tight.

The shade number at the bottom of the tube and the transparent pack makes it easier to recognize the shade and the quantity of product left.

Fragrance:

It has mild fragrance of some chemical. It’s so mild that it’s hardly noticed.

Applicator:

The dove feet applicator is soft and Veryyyy easy to use. This makes the application super easy.

Consistency:

It’s a liquid concealer. Not runny though. The finish it gives is dewy and soft finish.

Coverage:

This will last in my makeup bag for long now because of the coverage it gives…!!! This hides the flaws really well. I was super annoyed by the pimple scar I had last week. Trust me it was so dark that it was a good reason to get annoyed. Lakme concealer I tried made it look light. But it was still noticable. Uhh. But this concealer hid it so well. I loved it. So I can say the coverage is pretty great.

What I like about Maybelline Newyork Fit Me Concealer:

  • Coverage is awesome.
  • Travel friendly packing.
  • Comes with a nice applicator.
  • Doesn’t dry skin.
  • Totally worth the money.

What I didn’t like about Maybelline Newyork Fit Me Concealer:

  • Doesn’t has any SPF content like that of Lakme.
  • Shade availability is less, especially for deeper skin tones.

Which one will I repurchase???

I would definitely go for Maybelline because of its coverage. SPF content is not my concern as I can apply some good sunscreen on it separately. Hehe.

Which one will I recommend???

My recommendation depends on your skin needs.

If your main concern is dark circles and you like products with sun protection contents, go for Lakme.

If you have different skin problems like pimple scars, dark patches, unevenness then go for Maybelline. This gives you a great coverage. You can add SPF product later. What’s say???

I hope these quick reviews will help you chose the concealer for you. If you want to know more about concealer do check this post of mine, where I have explained everything you need to know about it.
